As Alabama’s first accredited sleep center with nearly 40 years of diagnostic experience, we use the most advanced polysomnographic equipment and certified sleep technologists to monitor every aspect of your sleep. Our comprehensive approach includes multiple types of sleep studies, comfortable patient accommodations, and access to cutting-edge clinical trials that may offer new treatment options not available elsewhere.

care from diagnosis to long-term treatment success

Complete Sleep Study Services

Diagnostic Overnight Sleep Studies (PSG)
A Sleep Study or Polysomnogram (PSG) electronically records specific physical activities while you sleep, creating data that our qualified physicians analyze to determine whether you have a sleep disorder. Our diagnostic overnight PSG provides general monitoring and evaluation without treatment, measuring brain waves (EEG), muscle tension, eye movements, heart rhythm, oxygen saturation, breathing patterns, and video/audio recording throughout the night. You’ll arrive at 8:00 PM and be greeted by a certified sleep technologist who will show you to your private room equipped with television and standing shower. After measuring vital signs and completing questionnaires, adhesive electrodes will be attached for monitoring, with your study beginning around 10:00 PM unless you request a different time.
Specialized Daytime Testing
The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is used to diagnose narcolepsy and measure the degree of daytime sleepiness, performed the morning following a diagnostic overnight PSG to ensure accurate results. The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) diagnoses your level of daytime alertness through scheduled 40-minute sessions where you’re asked to stay awake while sitting quietly in a dimly lit room. These specialized tests help distinguish between different causes of excessive daytime sleepiness and provide objective measurements of your sleep-wake function that can’t be determined through symptoms alone.
CPAP Titration Studies
When sleep apnea is diagnosed, we offer two types of CPAP pressure-setting studies. Two Night PSG with CPAP Titration involves general monitoring and diagnostic evaluation on the first night, then if sleep apnea is confirmed, you return for a second night to determine the adequate CPAP pressure setting needed to control your condition. Split Night PSG with CPAP Titration is conducted when moderate or severe sleep apnea is discovered during the first part of the night’s study, allowing us to use the second half of the night for CPAP pressure titration, making your diagnosis and treatment more efficient.
Comfortable Patient Experience
Our state-of-the-art sleep center features private rooms designed to feel like home, each equipped with comfortable beds, private bathrooms with showers, and cable television. Throughout the night, certified technologists monitor your study from a separate room, ready to assist with anything you need. In the morning, electrodes are removed, final vital signs taken, and you can shower, have coffee, eat breakfast, or watch television. Our doctors typically begin seeing patients between 7:30-8:00 AM to discuss your experience, review results, and explain treatment options, with most patients leaving between 9:30-10:00 AM.
Comprehensive Follow-Up Care
After your sleep study, we schedule follow-up appointments to discuss your progress and address any issues regarding your sleep disorder treatment. These appointments typically last 30 minutes to an hour and are essential for ensuring your treatment plan remains effective. If CPAP therapy is prescribed, our specialists will explain the benefits and help you choose between using our center’s services or a durable medical equipment company. We maintain ongoing relationships with patients to monitor treatment success and make adjustments as needed for optimal sleep health.

Pioneering Sleep Medicine Research

Cutting-Edge Clinical Research & Trials

The Sleep Disorders Center of Alabama is renowned for sleep medicine research, having conducted over 70 clinical research trials to expand treatment options for sleep disorders like insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and shift work sleep disorder. Over the past 10 years, we’ve participated in over 50 multi-center clinical trials, testing investigational medications and devices that may only be available through research participation. We are one of several sleep centers in the United States and, in some instances, other countries, that test medications and devices for safety and effectiveness in sleep disorder treatment.

Access to Investigational Treatments

Many of the treatments we test are investigational medications and devices only available through research participation. This is the required FDA approval process after successful trials and become available for doctors to prescribe to their patients nationwide.

Research Excellence & Patient Safety

Our Certified Clinical Research Coordinators ensure all studies follow strict FDA guidelines while providing research volunteers the same excellent care as our regular patients. We believe our research activities are vital to advancing sleep medicine for the millions of Americans who suffer from sleep disorders.

Current Research Opportunities

We continuously recruit volunteers for various studies testing new treatments for different sleep disorders including: Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia. Research participation may provide access to cutting-edge therapies not yet available to the general public, along with additional monitoring and care from our research team.
