Sleep Disorders Center of Alabama
About Our Sleep Clinic
Sleep Care You Can Rely On
Nearly 40 Years of Trusted Sleep Medicine in Birmingham
For nearly four decades, the Sleep Disorders Center of Alabama has been a name Birmingham residents trust for comprehensive, compassionate, and expert sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment. What began as pioneering work in sleep medicine has grown into Alabama’s most respected sleep center, rooted in medical excellence, patient-centered care, and a deep commitment to helping people achieve better health through better sleep.
Our Story
The Sleep Disorders Center of Alabama was co-founded in 1976 by Dr. G. Vernon Pegram, a true pioneer in sleep science who helped establish Alabama’s first accredited sleep center and one of the earliest in the United States.
Dr. Pegram’s remarkable journey began in the Air Force, where he studied sleep deprivation in pilots and helped train Ham and Enos, the chimpanzees who preceded astronauts into space. After completing his Ph.D., he joined UAB’s faculty for 32 years, becoming instrumental in developing sleep medicine education nationwide. As a Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, he helped establish over 50 sleep centers across the U.S. and trained more than 500 physicians and 1,000 technologists through his educational programs.
Though Dr. Pegram retired in 2013 after receiving the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Excellence in Education Award, his legacy of advancing sleep science while providing compassionate patient care continues to guide our center today.
We’ve served thousands of patients across Central Alabama, helping them overcome sleep disorders and improve their quality of life. Our long history isn’t just a timeline—it’s a promise of expertise, accountability, and dedication to every patient we serve.

The Accreditation Process
Accreditation is a voluntary process sleep centers undergo to demonstrate they meet all requirements developed by the accrediting body. AASM accreditation standards are developed by diplomates of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. The process takes a full year and includes application review, site inspection, evaluation, and final approval by the AASM Board of Directors. Accredited centers must maintain these standards through regular review, with standards continually updated to ensure optimal patient care.
